Several weeks has passed since Windows 7 Beta was released. And for the time being, the avavilablity of the Beta has been closed.Howeven,i think we've got much information about Windows 7 from all sorts of sites, posts and Microsoft employees.
Patrick Azzarello, Senior Program Manager/ Windows Deployment, Microsoft, said recently that “In Windows 7 we moved the license key to the Windows Welcome page, so you can enter it after the install. This makes it easier for people to evaluate and get started with Windows. We also provide a better experience when upgrading editions (i.e., from Home Premium to Ultimate) by enabling specific, licensed components, not reimaging the system.”

From this can we guess when Windows 7 is finally shipped to the market, there will be only one box? Then the main difference among those would-be versions will depend on whether there are locked or hidden features or not and how many features are locked or hidden.
We can't blame Microsoft on versions.why there are so many?Different people need different features. So it's not so bad an idea to offer so many versions.Take Vista for an example. If someone who doesn't like those eye candy, such as antimated desktop background and Ultimate Extras, then the Home Premium would be a right choice. But i don't think it is a good idea to offer a Home Basic version. In this version, too much components were removed, causing a loss of reliablity,as well as visual effect aero. What's more, since most of the brand new machines has a preloaded Home Basic version, customers will find it is worse than XP.I think this should be one reason why Vista had such a reputation.
When it comes to Windows 7,three versions are enough in my opinion,Home Premium,Ultimate and Enterprise.
